Birmingham Medical School

The underside of the auditorium nicknamed ‘the egg’ was constructed by hundreds of double curved birch ply panels. Most of the panels was unique and varied in profile and the longitude and latitude radii.

The panels were pressed in jigs from 3 layers of 6mm sheets, birch ply on the shown face and the other layers from OSB, glued with PU. They were then profiled to shape on the CNC before the edges were profiled on the spindle moulder to create the concealed T&G fixing.
